WOW #157: Subtle Stitches {and a Studio Calico giveaway}

14 Nov

For today’s WOW post, I wanted to share a fun way to add a bit of color and interest in a super subtle way – simply adding stitching with multiple colors of thread along the lines of your background paper.

It’s really easy to do and only uses the most basic of sewing skills.  Here’s a quick little photo tutorial:

First, gather your supplies.  You’ll need a background paper with some type of line to follow with your stitching.  You’ll also need several colors of thread.  I chose these colors to coordinate with the embellishments I planned to use.

Start stitching along the first line with the first thread color.  Use a straight stitch.  I chose a long stitch, but you can do shorter stitches if you prefer.

I wanted to stitch all of the orange lines first so I counted the lines in between and skipped up to the second orange line.

Move to the second color:

And the third color:

And finally the fourth color:

After the stitching is complete, trim the threads and attach to your layout.

The colored stitching really helps to tie everything together, don’t you think?

All of the supplies I used for this layout are part of the “Roller Rink” kit from Studio Calico

There are so many fun elements in this kit!  “…[it] mixes chevron woodgrain from Amy Tangerine with a rainbow of brights from Basic Grey, Teresa Collins, Tim & Beck and Studio Calico for a look that will make you want to break out your roller skates. You’ll love this month’s exclusives – we have vellum diecuts, an asterisk stamp set, badges, wide ledger washi tape and enamel dots in a just-for-us color scheme from My Mind’s Eye.”

So would you like to win a kit for yourself?  We have not only one, but TWO of these awesome kits to share with our readers!  All you have to do for your chance to win is leave a comment telling me if you’ve ever tried stitching on a layout.  We’ll announce the two random winners next Wednesday.  Good luck!

I have only hand stitched on a layout and that has only been once or twice. It looks really pretty but I seem to think that I would tear up my paper or make a mess of my work. I really want to try to use a machine to stitch.

I love to stitch on my cards ...I'm saving up for a sewing machine so for the time being mine's all done by hand.

I definitely think the colored stitching really is a fun way to get your elements to mesh! I have done some hand stitching on layouts. I sketched some swirls in pencil on one layout and then stitched over them and the other I did some cross stitches to create a homey feel. Thanks for sharing your fun idea! The biggest thing keeping me from using my machine on my projects is it's just so big and I'm not much of a sewer, but I definitely love the look so one day I might get around to doing it!

I've done a little hand stitching on a LO. I've avoided machine stitching because I hate to pull out my old HEAVY machine. You incorporated stitching into your LO in such a creative way!

I have done a little bit of hand stitching on layouts. I've never machine stitched on a layout because I hate to drag out my HEAVY sewing machine. I think it's so creative the way you added stitching to your layout!

I have always wanted to try stiching on a layout, but have never had the nerve to try - afraid of messing it up.

Bellissimo progetto!

I have stitched on my cards, but not on my layouts. Even then, it's mostly by hand. Like some other posters noted, I don't like to drag out and set up the machine! Love the kit. Thanks for the chance to win!

I love to stitch on my layouts, but my first love was sewing, did I say was? yes, scrapbooking has been my number 1 for 11 years but I love to add my personality to everything I create. Love the kit, I'd love to win.

What a clever idea. I have done some handstitching before, but sewing machines are one machine I have never really learnt to use. Hubby does most of the sewing duties in our household. cheers Linda

That is so funny that this post is about sewing and scrapbooking. I do good to sew a button but I had a vision for a layout I was doing. I was over at my friend's house and she is a sewer. And I mean big time. She has made a business out of it. So I asked her to help me. She lined up the page and the thread but I acutally sewed on the page. There are a couple crooked spaces but I did it. I was so proud and I hope to do it again soon! This post gives me more inspiration. Thanks!

I know I should be hiding rather than admit this but i do not stitch on my layouts. When I want to sew I use the WRMK Sew Easy tool and that's it... Love seeing it on other people's layouts but no way I am adding the sewing machine to the gluey glittery mess that is my scrappy desk!
