WOW #169: From Paper Scraps to Candles

10 Jul

Do you love patterned paper so much that it’s hard for you to throw away your scraps?  Do you love finding new and creative ways to use your scraps?  I hope I’m not the only one!  And if I am the only one…well, I shouldn’t be – because there are some awesome things you can do with those scraps!  Here’s just one way to put those scraps of paper strips to good use – use them to create this super simple birthday card!

You’ll only need a few supplies: Some paper scraps,  a trimmer, a teardrop punch (this is optional – you could cut this shape easily by hand), some foam adhesive dots, and a white card base.

Start by trimming your scraps into strips – I made mine 5/16″ because my foam squares are 1/4″ and I wanted the paper to be slightly wider.

Trim as many pieces as you’d like, then cut them to similar lengths – no need to be exact!

Next, use the punch (or scissors) to create several yellow teardrop shapes.

Add foam adhesive pieces to the back of each paper strip.

And add foam adhesive to the back of each teardrop.

Now simply line them up and attach them to the white card base.

You could add a sentiment if you’d like, but I think these colorful candles adequately convey the message of “Happy Birthday!”

See how easy that was?  And to think it only took a few minutes and was made out of small pieces that could have easily ended up in the trash can!  You could whip up a dozen of these in half an hour – wouldn’t that be a nice addition to your card stash?  And think of other possibilities as well – these strips could be firecrackers if they were red, white, and blue; or holiday candles by simply switching the colors; you could even use the same idea to create a border on a layout or a single candle would be so cute on a gift tag, and woudn’t an oversized version make a cute addition to a gift bag?  So many possibilities from such a simple concept!

If you like this idea, or have a nice stash of paper scraps just waiting to be used, you won’t want to miss the “How To”  article in the July 2013 issue of Scrapbook Trends.  It’s all about creative ways to use leftover paper strips on your layouts!

Hi Lynn! The teardrop punch is super old - it was made by EK Success. I just did a quick search and I can't find it, but I did find a border punch by Martha Stewart with a similar shape on Amazon. You can search "Martha Stewart raindrop punch" and it should come right up!

Love this idea!! I hate throwing scraps away. Definitely going to remember this. I think I may just keep an envelope or ziploc full of strips and flames. Then it would be fast and easy to throw a card together. Great tip!
