Stitched CARDS Challenge Gallery and Next Challenge!

23 Mar

Stitching adds such a fun finishing touch and gives cards and layouts alike a “homespun” feel. It’s also a great alternative to adhesive and keeps things in place permanently. Leave threads long to add interest and trim them off for a clean look. Hand stitching, machine stitching, the possibilities are endless! We’ve gathered 13 cards with stitching to inspire you and hope you’ll like them as much as I do!

Congrats LauraEvangeline! Email me at paiget@northridgepublishing.com to claim your STITCHED kit!
Today we’re giving away a spot in the class I’m teaching the entire month of April at Studio Calico called STITCHED!

I stitch on seriously 90% of my layouts and cards. I LOVE the unique and home-spun look machine and hand stitching gives my layouts. In this class I’ll be teaching (along with some talented scrapbooking friends – Allison Waken, Amy Tan, Becky Novacek, Beshka Kueser, Carissa Wiley, Erin Stewart, Gina Lideros, Heather Leopard, Katie Ehmann, Lea Lawson, Leena Loh, Lexi Bridges, Meghann Andrew, Nicole Samuels, Pam Baldwin, and Robyn Werlich) 24 unique techniques for adding stitching to your layouts, cards, home decor pieces, and Project Life® spreads.

Here is the kit that ships with the class full of journaling cards with stitching templates, exclusive stamps, an actual stitching template, wood veneer stitchable tag, gold floss, and more!

There are also bonus digital files: die cut files by Hello Forever and Julie Campbell, printable journaling cards and accents by Hello Forever, and a printable stitching template by Julie Campbell. Check ‘em out:

I’ve seen them with mine own eyes, printed them, cut them, stamped them, stitched them, and I must say, they’re stellar!

I’ll be making 8 layouts and 4 how-to videos that will post all throughout the month of April.

Watch a short little video as I walk through the class supplies and demonstrate why you won’t want to miss this class:

Screen Shot 2014-03-13 at 7.07.09 AM

Here is a close up of one of the journaling cards I stitched through with red/pink ombre thread. Can’t wait to add this to a layout!

Here’s a little sneak peek of one of the layouts where I stitched with the template the word “shine”!

ANNND, here’s an exclusive offer!:

Registration for STITCHED will close on 3/31/2014 at 11:59pm EST. Class begins on April 1, 2014!

Copper Mountain – a Studio Calico Giveaway!

26 Feb

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Studio Calico kit to give away to one of our readers – but the wait is over!  Check out this gorgeous kit called “Copper Mountain:”

SCJan2014Main_copper_mountain

Aren’t those colors just happy and cozy?!?  Here’s how Studio Calico describes this kit:

“Head to the top of COPPER MOUNTAIN. Our January kit transports you to a cozy ski lodge, filled with rich colors, graphic patterns and woodgrain accents. In addition to papers from Studio Calico, October Afternoon and We R Memory Keepers, this kit contains a full line up of Studio Calico embellishments you won’t find anywhere else – a wood veneer die cut, mini badges, vellum alphabet stickers, and puffy hearts and chipboard stickers in a rainbow of colors.”

I am loving each and every element in this kit – but I am especially excited about one of the exclusive elements – the wood veneer die cut…let’s take a closer look, shall we?

SCJan2014Main_copper_mountain_wood_veneer

Just so you can get an idea of the scale – this piece is 4″ wide and 6″ tall – the same size as a standard photo.

I spent a long time on Studio Calico’s website perusing the Copper Mountain gallery looking at all of the fun and unique ways this wood veneer piece has been put to use.  Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

  • Use it as an album cover – fill some of the circles with patterned paper, chipboard pieces, and stickers
  • Cut it in half vertically and align it with the edge of a layout
  • Paint it a different color – I saw one with a whitewash finish, I think it was my favorite!
  • Use it as a mask and use spray mist to transfer the image onto paper
  • Use it as a photo mat – just trim a photo slightly smaller so the edges are all visible
  • Cut it in half horizontally and use it on a card – fill every single circle with bold patterned paper
  • Cut several of the circles off and use them individually (I’m not sure how to go about cutting these, but I love the idea!)
  • Place the entire piece in a pocket page protector – leave it blank or add other embellishments in the circles
  • Turn it into a photo frame – add circle shaped photos to the larger openings

There are so many ways to use this fun kit element!  So…if YOU owned this exclusive item, how would YOU use it?  Leave a comment on this post telling me how you would use it, and I’ll choose a random winner!  If your name is chosen as the winner, you will not only win this awesome wood veneer piece, you will win the entire Copper Mountain Kit, courtesy of Studio Calico!

I can’t wait to hear your ideas – good luck!

WOW #181: Valentine’s Day Garland

12 Feb

Valentine’s Day is only a few days away – have you taken the time to add a little love to your home decor?  If you haven’t, or if you’re up for adding a little bit more, here’s a quick and easy way to do it – with a fun little garland!

wow181_detail4

I used these cute little die cuts (dies from Top Dog Dies) with fun patterned papers (from Fancy Pants Designs) to create my little garland.

wow181_supplies1`wow181_supplies2

Here’s how:

1.  Use the die (you could do the same thing with digital dies or even punches) to cut a BUNCH of shapes…

wow181_step1a

I cut my paper into 6×6 squares and just cut and cut and cut…using as much of the paper as I could.

wow181_step1

Until I had a pile like this:

wow181_step2

Then I sat down in front of my trusty old sewing machine, loaded it with gray thread on top and a white bobbin and just started feeding the pieces through:

wow181_step3

Use a straight stitch and just feed the pieces through, one after another.  This is super easy, but takes a little bit of time.  Eventually, this is what I had:

wow181_done

That’s it!  Now I have a fun, festive garland to decorate our home – and add a little more love for Valentine’s Day!wow181_detail1

This same garland would be darling wrapped around a gift box – can you picture it on a white or kraft wrapped box?  lovely!

wow181_detail2

Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day?  We’d love to see your ideas!
